Frequently Asked Questions about Daily Rates

What are daily exchange rates in Angola?

Daily exchange rates refer to the rates offered by Angolan commercial banks on any given day. Each bank sets its rates freely, according to the supply of and demand for foreign currency, and they can change during the day and differ from the reference rate published by the National Bank of Angola (BNA). cambio.ao collects and compares the rates published by 19 banks and sorts them from best to worst.

Buying and selling rates: which is which?

The buying rate is what the bank pays you for foreign currency: it applies when you sell dollars, euros or rand to the bank for kwanzas. The selling rate is what the bank charges you for foreign currency: it applies when you buy dollars, euros or rand from the bank, paying in kwanzas. That is why the selling rate is normally the higher of the two.

How do banks in Angola set their exchange rates?

Each commercial bank freely sets its own buying and selling rates, according to the supply of and demand for foreign currency and its own commercial policy, and can change them during the day. That is why the same currency can have different rates from bank to bank. cambio.ao gathers the rates of 19 banks in one place so you can compare them.

How do I use the cambio.ao bank comparison tool?

Choose «Buy» or «Sell» and the currency: the table sorts the banks only by the rate each one publishes, best to worst, and shows, in kwanzas, the gap to the best published rate. In «By bank» you see every currency of a single bank. Star banks to find them faster. Each bank's rates are checked every hour.

How often are the bank rates updated?

Exchange rates are collected automatically every hour directly from the official websites of Angolan commercial banks. This ensures you're always comparing the most recent rates available in the formal market.

Can I exchange currency directly on cambio.ao?

No. cambio.ao is an information-only platform. We don't perform currency exchanges or transfers. To exchange currency, you should visit a commercial bank authorized by the BNA. We use the rates the banks publish to help you find the best rate before visiting a branch.

How do I choose the best bank for currency exchange in Angola?

cambio.ao does not rate banks: it sorts them only by the rate each one publishes. If you want to sell foreign currency (e.g., dollars), look for the best published buy rate. If you want to buy foreign currency, look for the best published sell rate. Also consider branch locations and currency availability at your chosen bank.

What is the rate at the kinguila and how does it compare to banks?

Kinguila (or quínguila) is the name given in Angola to the people who buy and sell currency on the street, traditionally women, and the rate they trade at is the street rate. It is usually different from the banks' rates. cambio.ao shows both for informational comparison only, and recommends that all currency operations be carried out exclusively through commercial banks authorised by the BNA, in accordance with the Exchange Law (Law No. 5/97).

What is the BNA reference rate for today's exchange?

The National Bank of Angola (BNA) publishes a daily reference exchange rate for each currency, which serves as the official reference, for example for accounting, tax and statistical purposes. The latest value appears in the BNA row of the table on this page, outside the ranking. It is not a rate at which you can buy or sell currency: the rates customers pay are set by each bank.
