Bank Exchange Rates in Angola

What are indicative exchange rates?

This page shows the indicative exchange rates (buy/sell) published by commercial banks on their own websites. Rates are set by each bank and may change throughout the day; the rate applied in your transaction may differ from the indicative table at the time of execution.

What is the role of the National Bank of Angola (BNA)?

Official Reference (BNA) — In parallel, the National Bank of Angola publishes the market reference exchange rate daily on its portal by 12:30 PM on each business day. This rate is for statistical/official purposes and does not determine the final customer price.

Regulatory Basis (Summary)

The current framework (Instruction No. 16/2019, dated 24/10/2019) defines the methodology for calculating the market reference exchange rate and the regulatory framework for foreign exchange operations. In transactions between banks and customers, exchange rates are freely set by commercial banks, based on the official reference rate and foreign currency supply and demand conditions.

In practice, most transactions by individuals and small businesses use the exchange rate tables published by banks (counter, digital channels), without individual rate negotiation. For high-value transactions or specific conditions, the final rate may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the bank, and may differ from the published indicative rate, depending on factors such as the transaction amount, the channel used, and the availability of foreign currency at the time.

Important Notes for Users

Indicative and non-binding rates: The displayed tables are indicative and non-binding; always confirm the rate with your bank before completing the transaction.

The Angolan Kwanza

The kwanza (ISO 4217 code: AOA) is the official currency of the Republic of Angola. Introduced in 1999, the kwanza replaced the readjusted kwanza as the country’s monetary unit. The National Bank of Angola (BNA) is responsible for issuing the kwanza and managing its monetary policy, using a managed floating exchange rate regime. The value of the kwanza against the main international currencies — the US dollar (USD), the euro (EUR) and the South African rand (ZAR) — is determined by the interaction between supply and demand in the formal foreign exchange market, subject to the supervision and intervention of the BNA when necessary to maintain financial stability.

Kwanza Exchange Rates

The kwanza’s exchange rates are set daily by the commercial banks based on the BNA reference rate published through the foreign exchange auctions. Each bank applies its own margin (spread) on this reference, resulting in significant differences between institutions.
